3 tips for a green holiday barbecue

UCOP Sustainability is here to help you live a greener lifestyle with a new series, Green Tip of the Week.

Planning a socially distanced barbeque for the long weekend? Make it green! Here are three tips to make your celebration sustainable:

  1. Buy supplies from local and sustainable sources. Dollars spent at local businesses have a greater impact in the local community than money spent at national retailers.
  2. Right-size your purchases, especially when purchasing perishable foods. Avoid waste by trying to buy only as much as you will be able to consume before the food goes bad.
  3. Use reusable plates and cutlery whenever possible. If you must use disposable foodware, aim to purchase BPI-certified compostable products and make sure they make it to a compost bin!

How about using it as a time to try Impossible or Beyond Burgers or sausages. They are great and you can’t tell the difference and will help the planet.
