Recognizing Vice President Cathryn Nation’s dedication and service

Dr. Carrie L. Byington, executive vice president and head of UC Health, sent a version of the following message to all UCOP employees on June 16, 2022.

Dear Colleagues,

Vice President for Health Sciences Cathryn L. Nation, M.D.

Many of you know and have worked with Vice President for Health Sciences Cathryn L. Nation, M.D., during her long career at the UC Office of the President. I am writing now to share with you her decision to retire at the end of this academic year. I hope you will join me in thanking Dr. Nation for her 32 years of distinguished service to the University of California, and her many accomplishments and achievements. I am pleased to tell you that upon her retirement, in recognition of her work, the university will confer upon her the title of vice president emerita for academic health sciences.

Dr. Nation has held a career-long focus on issues of access, equity, diversity and inclusion and has created new and expanded opportunities for UC health sciences students, residents and faculty. Together with her talented team, she has worked successfully with leaders across the system to secure new and ongoing funding for the UC Riverside School of Medicine, the UCSF expanded medical education program in the San Joaquin Valley, and for both new and existing UC PRIME programs. She has partnered effectively with campus leaders and guided our UC Health systemwide Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) task force.

Dr. Nation also has been a steady and thoughtful public voice for UC health sciences, serving on the California Health Workforce Policy Commission and advising the cochairs of the California Future Health Workforce Commission. She and her team provide stewardship and oversight of the statewide graduate medical education program, funded at $40M annually.

Until a permanent successor is identified, we will appoint an interim leader for the Academic Health Sciences department to ensure that this work continues successfully.

Please join me in thanking Dr. Nation for her leadership and wishing her the best in all her future endeavors.

Fiat Lux,

Dr. Carrie L. Byington
Executive Vice President

How am I always late to the table???
Katherine, congratulations on your retirement and your many successful years of service. We never did get that cup of coffee and a chance to reminisce about all our past adventures in student healthcare/SHIP. I retired in 2016, but every year I’ve thought, I got to meet up with Katherine before SHE retires.
    Dang…I missed it!
I hope you’re loving retirement, if you’re anything g like me in the first few months after ( after you get back from that trip everyone tells you to take) you might want to go to lunch on some non-work scheduled time. Let me know. I still enjoy the chance to get to the East Bay (Oakland or Berkeley ) or wherever you find convenient. If this does not sound entertaining, no worries. Just know I wish you the best and a very happy, healthy well deserved retirement.
    Take care of yourself,
