Level-up your Staff Talent Evaluation Process (STEP) goal-setting skills

UCOP STEP Training for New Employees: Define Criteria
Wednesday, Nov. 1, 10 – 11 a.m.
This instructor-led STEP training expands on the materials presented in the STEP Fundamentals for Employees eCourse by going into detail on the first stage of STEP, called Define Criteria. You will practice writing goals, then review strategies for choosing your focus competencies.

GROWing your Check-In Conversations for Employees
Wednesday, Nov. 15, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This two-hour virtual live workshop provides an opportunity for employees to learn about the GROW framework and then practice using it in a mock STEP check-in to get peer feedback. You’ll also learn general tips and strategies for providing feedback to your manager. You must take the ecourse “GROWing your Checkpoint Conversations” prior to this class.

GROWing your Check-In Conversations for Managers
Tuesday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This interactive session provides managers with an opportunity to discuss and practice using the GROW framework as a strategy for supporting engaging STEP checkpoint conversations. You’ll learn how to take a growth and development approach in employee-manager coaching and feedback conversations. You must take the ecourse “GROWing your Checkpoint Conversations” prior to this class.

Grow your tech acumen

Excel: Power BI
Tuesdays, Nov. 7, Nov. 14 & Nov. 21, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn about and practice using Power BI! Topics include: connecting to data sources; performing data cleaning, profiling and shaping; visualizing data with Power BI; creating interactive visualizations; enhancing reports and dashboards; and publishing and sharing reports and dashboards. Participants must attend all three sessions.

Box Fundamentals
Wednesday, Nov. 8, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Get a live overview of Box — the cloud-based service that provides UCOP with secure file storage and file sharing — and have an opportunity to ask questions.

Excel Macros and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
Wednesdays, Nov. 29 & Dec. 6, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
In this two-part series, you’ll learn how Macros and VBA help users customize and automate repetitive tasks in Excel. Macros can automate tasks to be repeated; where Macros are limited, VBA coding can expand your ability to perform those necessary tasks. We strongly recommend that you successfully complete MS Excel Intermediate, or have the requisite skills taught in that class, before enrolling. Participants must attend both sessions.

Leadership Development Opportunities Information Session
Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2 – 3 p.m. | Friday, Nov. 17, 9 – 10 a.m. | Tuesday, Nov. 28, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Whether you’re an individual contributor early in your career or a seasoned manager with years of experience, it’s always the right time to continue developing your leadership skills! Take Charge Information Session
Thursday, Nov. 9, 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
If you’re an administrative, support or entry-level staff member who’s ready to take your career to the next level, consider the UCOP cohort learning opportunity Take Charge: Developing a Career Strategy. This five-month program, sponsored by Learning and Development, will give you the tools you need to thrive in the workplace for years to come. “Take Charge helped give me the tools I needed to focus my ambition,” says Administrative Assistant Mark Turner, a previous Take Charge participant. “I also came away with a fresh perspective on my professional skillsets that have accumulated over time.”

Stay safe during an emergency

UCOP Safety Active Attacker Training
Thursday, Nov. 2, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn skills and strategies for how to respond if you are exposed to an active-attacker situation. The course will review real-life incidents and discuss options in the event of potential similar encounters. Safety expert Melissa Collins, program manager for Security, Risk and Resilience, will facilitate this live virtual class. Melissa joined UCOP after serving 20 years with the UC San Diego Police Department, retiring as a lieutenant.

Learn to better support your team

People Leader Forum – Psychological Safety
Friday, Nov. 3, 1 – 2 p.m.
The People Leader Forum is a monthly opportunity for people managers to connect with one another to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their teams. In this month’s session we’ll focus on how to create a culture of psychological safety within your team.

Starting a new job or transitioning to a new location can be daunting. The UCOP New Employee Orientation is designed to facilitate your smooth transition to the organization. Topics will include UC and our history, UCOP overview, tools and resources, safety and compliance.
