Year-round support for UC veterans
UC officially celebrated Veterans Day last Friday and November is National Veterans and Military Families Month, so it’s a perfect time to recognize the contributions of veterans at UC — students, faculty and staff. To get inspired, learn how UC Irvine is giving voice to veterans through a Veterans Study Certificate program.
If you’re an employee who’s a veteran, or if there’s a veteran you’d like to encourage to apply for a job at UC, or for admission to UC, the following resources may help.
UCOP employee resource group for veterans: Veterans Among US
Veterans Among US helps UCOP employees engage in activities and events that support veterans, military service organizations and academia, and creates bonds based on armed services connections, including personal and family affiliations as well as overall admiration for the armed services. For more information, contact mark.romo@ucop.edu.
Support for staff serving in the military and family members of service members
In some cases, if you are on active military duty, you may be eligible for supplemental pay equal to the difference between your military pay and your UC pay. See the Supplement to Military Pay policy for more information (PDF).
UC provides up to 26 weeks of Military Caregiver Leave to care for a family member or next of kin who is a covered service member undergoing medical treatment, recuperation or therapy for a serious injury or illness.
If you are the spouse, domestic partner, child or parent of a covered member of the military when that member is on active duty or called to active duty, you may take Qualifying Exigency Leave for a number of activities including military ceremonies, childcare and school activities for the military member’s child, and the military member’s short-term rest and recuperation.
