October is the perfect time to take stock of what you still hope to accomplish this year and to make progress toward those goals. A great way to get started is by participating in classes and workshops through UCOP Learning and Development. Offered at no charge to UCOP staff, these helpful trainings can boost your personal and professional growth.

Career development, STEP and manager training

GROWing Your Check-In Conversations for Employees
Oct. 1, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
In this virtual live workshop, employees will practice using the GROW framework in STEP Check-Ins and learn tips and strategies for providing feedback.

Gartner Introduction
Oct. 15, 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn how to tailor your Gartner membership experience to leverage the latest research available to you on generative AI, manager effectiveness, DEI and more. This class will cover customized membership and homepage views, Research Resource Centers, tools, benchmarks and informational webinars.

People Leader Forum: Equity Process
Oct. 18, 1 – 2 p.m.
People Leader Forums are a monthly opportunity for people managers to connect with one another to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their team. Our October session will feature UCOP Compensation Manager JJ Lerma, who will explain the compensation equity review process. Our final two sessions of the year will cover STEP tips and tricks (Nov. 15) and team reflection activities (Dec. 20).

UCOP Learning and Development Cohort Opportunities Overview
Oct. 25, 11 – 11:45 a.m. | Oct. 31, 9 – 9:45 a.m. | Nov. 6, 2 – 2:45 p.m.
Whether you’re an individual contributor who is early in your career or a seasoned manager with years of experience, it’s always the right time to continue developing your professional skills. Join us at this info session to learn more about the various learning and development cohorts that will be offered in 2025. During the first 30 minutes, we will review each of the programs, including their aims and intended audiences. We will close the session with 15 minutes of audience questions. You will leave with a better understanding of our cohort learning opportunities to identify which will best fit your professional goals.

GROWing Your Check-In Conversations for Managers
Oct. 29, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
GROW is a popular coaching framework used worldwide for problem-solving, goal-setting and performance improvement. This interactive session provides managers with an opportunity to discuss and practice using the GROW framework as a strategy and tool to support engaging STEP checkpoint conversations. Learn to promote a growth and development stance in your coaching and feedback conversations.

Personal safety

UCOP Safety: Basic Awareness
Oct. 10, 9 – 10 a.m. | Nov. 3, 2 – 3 p.m. | Dec. 3, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Melissa Collins, program manager for security, risk and resilience, will facilitate this live virtual class, providing basic safety tips to help you feel informed, alert and safe as you travel to and from the workplace. Extra time is allotted for questions and feedback.

UCOP Safety: Active Attacker Training
Oct. 15, 10 – 11a.m. | Nov. 13, 3 – 4 p.m. | Dec. 5, 2 – 3 p.m.
This live virtual class will teach you skills and strategies to respond if you’re exposed to an active-attacker situation. We’ll review real-life incidents and discuss options in the event of similar encounters.

Social and emotional learning

Social Emotional Learning at Work: Creating Connection and Belonging at UCOP
Oct. 23 & Oct. 31, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Incorporating the principles of social and emotional learning (SEL) at work enhances our ability to communicate and connect with a range of people in healthy ways. Research indicates that focusing on SEL at work can lead to greater employee satisfaction and retention. At this session, SEL expert, author and educator Rachelle Rogers-Ard, Ed.D., will provide frameworks and interactive exercises to support building connections between peers and teams. *Participants must attend both sessions for course credit.

Technology

Box Advanced
Oct. 10, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
In this class, we will cover a wide range of advanced Box techniques, including: Setting up alerts to monitor folders, using Box groups to manage department collaborations, securely storing sensitive data and importing data to box from email and URLs.

Excel Power Pivot
Oct. 17 and Oct. 24, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Advance your Excel skills by learning Power Pivot! In this class, you’ll become familiar with PowerPivot as you learn to import and manipulate data, create reports using PowerPivot data, use DAX functions in PowerPivot and distribute PowerPivot data.

Creating Accessible Documents
Oct. 23, 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Digital accessibility is about ensuring users with disabilities can easily access and engage with any digital content. In this course, you’ll learn the principles of digital accessibility, how to generate accessible Microsoft Office documents and how to export these files to PDF.
