President James B. Milliken sent the following message to UCOP colleagues on Aug. 4, 2025:
Dear UCOP Colleagues:
As I begin my first week as President of the University of California, I’m deeply grateful to join all of you in serving this extraordinary institution. I’ve had the privilege of serving four different university systems in four very different states. These jobs have shaped me in important ways, and I hope they have helped prepare me for UC.
The University of California’s success is unparalleled — and that’s a credit to all of you and your many colleagues throughout the University who, for decades, have propelled this university. I know what it takes to make a large university system successful — and I know it’s impossible without the dedication and contributions of staff members such as you. Every day, your work makes a difference here in California and around the world.
This is a difficult time in higher education. But I am convinced that our role in education, research and patient care is more important now than at any other point in our history. Together, we will meet the challenges UC faces, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of partners in this effort.
Nana and I are excited to make our new home here and to get to know the UC family. We look forward to meeting you and learning more about your work.
I am honored and grateful to join you at UC.
With appreciation,
James B. Milliken
President
