Communication and change management

Change Essentials
Oct. 2, Oct. 9 and Oct. 16, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Three sessions)
Change Essentials is based on the best-selling book, “Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions,” by Dr. John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber. Dr. Kotter’s research revealed eight key steps and four critical leadership principles that, when applied effectively, help to ensure successful change. This three-part workshop will provide you with a foundational level of knowledge and skill to help you identify strategies to apply those steps and principles to a current or anticipated change within a department, or as part of a broader organizational change initiative.

Difficult Conversations
Oct. 14, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Have you ever disagreed with someone where the conversation didn’t go quite how you wanted? Conflict is inevitable. This highly interactive course will explore strategies for navigating difficult conversations in your personal and professional life. You’ll learn core principles for successfully navigating disagreements, then apply them through practice role-playing. By the end of the workshop, you’ll feel more confident in approaching difficult conversations with anyone.

Subtle Acts of Exclusion
Oct. 29, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
The term “microaggression” has become widely used, yet it is just as widely misunderstood. Join us as we reframe microaggressions as subtle acts of exclusion (SAE). Explore the SAE framework, learn how to interrupt SAEs, engage colleagues in discussion and reflect on how our socialization impacts our outlook, attitudes and behavior.

Safety and wellness

UCOP Safety: Basic Awareness
Oct. 16, 1 – 2 p.m.
Safety expert Melissa Collins, program manager for Security, Risk and Resilience, will facilitate this 30-minute live virtual class. Learn basic safety tips to feel informed, alert and safe as you travel to and from the workplace. We’ll allow extra time for questions and feedback.

FSAP Webinar: Navigating Aggression, Threats, & Digital Harassment in the Workplace
Oct. 21, 12 – 1 p.m.
In today’s health care and educational environments, professionals are encountering more frequent instances of aggression, threat and digital harassment that can take a toll on personal well-being. This webinar offers practical tools to transform fear into strength. Attendees will learn how to recognize and respond to threatening situations, individual strategies to enhance physical and emotional safety, and resources available to support physical safety and personal recovery.

Software and project management

Excel Power Pivot
Oct. 1 & Oct. 8, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Two sessions)
Advance your Excel skills by learning Power Pivot. In this class, you will: Become familiar with the PowerPivot application while you practice importing, manipulating and distributing data; creating reports; and using DAX functions.

Smartsheet Essentials: Project Planning Made Easy
Oct. 7, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn the core skills needed to manage projects effectively using Smartsheet in this foundational session, designed for new users and project managers seeking to understand how to leverage Smartsheet for project planning and execution. Through practical demonstrations, real-world scenarios and hands-on activities, participants will gain the knowledge to set up and manage and organize projects confidently, using features such as Gantt charts, task assignments, and resource allocation.

Box Advanced
Oct. 8, 1 – 2 p.m.
In this advanced Box class, we’ll cover a variety of topics, including securely storing sensitive data in Box; sending data to Box via email or URL; setting up alerts to monitor folders; and using Box groups to manage department collaborations.

Excel Intermediate/Advanced
Oct. 15 and Oct. 22, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Microsoft Excel has hundreds of features and functions. In this two-session course, we’ll cover core Excel features and featured tools, including SumIFs, AveregeIFs and CountIFs; tables with structured referencing; and Pivot Tables. Attendance is required for the two sessions.

UCOP Creating Accessible Documents 1: MS Office
Oct. 22, 1 – 2:30 p.m.

Digital accessibility is about ensuring that users with disabilities can easily access and engage with any digital content. In this course, you will learn the principles of digital accessibility, how to generate accessible Microsoft Office documents and how to export these to PDF. This is the first course in the series and a prerequisite for UCOP Creating Accessible Documents 2: PDFs.

Training for people managers

People Leader Forum – Managing Newer Professionals
Oct. 3, 1 – 2 p.m.
The People Leader Forum is a monthly opportunity for managers to connect to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their teams. Our Oct. 3 session will focus on managing early-career staff.

GROW Plus: Accountability Conversations for Managers
Oct. 17, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This course is the second part of the required live training series on manager and employee performance conversations. During this session, we will answer the question: “What do I do when my coaching is not improving performance?” In this virtual, live and highly interactive workshop, we will cover: providing productive critical feedback, managing emotions, creating efficient documentation and holding effective accountability conversations. Managers will also practice role-playing accountability conversations using the UCOP GROW Plus framework.

ME@UCOP: Managing in the Modern Workplace
Oct. 21, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. | Oakland, Broadway, 10001
ME@UCOP provides crucial knowledge and advice for managers and supervisors who are new to UCOP management. Through a series of seven classes, people managers learn essential UCOP processes, policies, competencies and leadership philosophies, while building community and connection with their peers. Topics include: UCOP hiring and recruitment, compensation, inclusive leadership, procurement, UCOP policies and laws, and people development.

GROWing Your Check–In Conversations for Managers
Oct. 30, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
GROW is a popular coaching framework used worldwide for problem solving, goal setting and performance improvement. This interactive session allows managers to discuss and practice using the GROW framework as a strategy and tool to support engaging STEP checkpoint conversations. Note: The e-course “GROWing your Checkpoint Conversations” must be taken before this class.
