VIDEO: President Milliken celebrates UC’s 5 Nobel Prizes
President Milliken shared the following message and video with UC staff on Friday, Oct. 17, 2025:
Last week, five UC-affiliated scientists won Nobel Prizes in the areas of medicine, physics and chemistry, including four UC faculty and one UC alumnus — Omar Yaghi, John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, John M. Martinis and Frederick J. Ramsdell.
We’re the first university in the world to have four faculty receive Nobel Prizes in a single year, and these scientists join a long legacy of UC laureates.
We are bursting with pride, but these honors are about more than bragging rights. Real people’s lives will be improved through this and other UC research. Because of it, scientists will advance drug discovery, cybersecurity, agriculture, and energy. Doctors will gain new insight into addressing life-altering medical conditions. People in drought-torn areas will have the ability to harvest clean drinking water from desert air.
The Nobel Prizes are tangible evidence of the work happening across the University of California every day to expand knowledge, test the boundaries of science, and conduct research that improves the lives of Californians, Americans and people around the word.
Thank you for your part in making this work possible.
With deep gratitude,
James B. Milliken
UC President
