Introducing 2024-25 Academic Senate Chair Steven W. Cheung, M.D.
The Systemwide Academic Senate is pleased to introduce 2024-25 Academic Senate Chair Steven W. Cheung, M.D.
Steve is a professor and ear specialist in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at UCSF. Since joining the UCSF faculty in 1994, he has been treating patients with conditions related to hearing and balance, and performing diagnostic and therapeutic studies on tinnitus — ringing in the ears. He finds great joy in teaching microsurgery of the ear and cranium, and is a ten-time winner of the UCSF Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery Teaching Awards.
He is equally passionate about Senate service and is the recipient of the 2021 Academic Senate Mid-Career Leadership Award.
Outside his medical practice, federally funded research, and Senate service, Steve enjoys woodworking and plumbing to keep his century-old San Francisco home in good order. He and his wife, Martha, have two adult children and an Old English sheepdog. He is not a Luddite but enjoys growing his collection of fountain pens, Kyoto Ningyo dolls, slide rules and traditional Asian seals. You can often find him sporting a bow tie in the Franklin Building.
Please join us in welcoming Steve to the UCOP community!
