Project Management for Non-Project Managers
Sept. 3, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Whatever your role, chances are that you’re involved with project management on some level. If your primary role isn’t project management, but you’d like to learn more about the fundamentals of project management and how you can apply them to your projects, this is the course for you! While we will cover traditional project management concepts, this session is focused on sharing innovative insights and practical techniques to help you better manage projects of all kinds.
Practical Productivity
Sept. 10, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Time management can feel daunting. Competing priorities, unruly calendars and tight time budgets can leave you feeling like you’ve spent all day running on a treadmill with little to show for your efforts. Join us in this two-hour class as we strategically tackle the four phases in the time management cycle: prioritize, organize, execute and track. You’ll be introduced to an array of time-management tools and practices that will help you identify and address your biggest barriers to a balanced and productive work life.
Safety and wellness
UCOP Safety: Active Attacker Training
Sept. 11, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Program Manager for Security, Risk and Resilience Melissa Collins, a safety expert, will facilitate this live virtual class in which participants will learn skills and strategies to respond if exposed to an active-attacker situation. The course will review real-life incidents and discuss options in the event of potential similar encounters.
UCOP Wellbeing Lunch and Chat: Vulnerability & Resilience – The Story We Tell
Sept. 26, 12:10 – 12:55 p.m.
Imagine you’re feeling inadequate after a critical comment from your supervisor. Instead of going down the rabbit hole with this narrative, you can transform negative self-talk to constructive reflections by reframing the story. (Learnings for this session are based on the work of Brené Brown)
Software and technology
Excel Advanced Data Analysis
Sept. 17 and Sept. 24, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
In this two-part class, we’ll focus on essential advanced Excel skills. Topics will include:
- Working with multiple worksheets and workbooks, sharing and protecting workbooks, and automating workbook functionality, including an introduction to macros and VBA
- Dynamic arrays, including filter, sort by, unique and other functions
- Auditing tools
- Forecasting data, including determining trends, utilizing the analyze data tool, building forecast sheets and creating sparklines
- Data mapping
Note: Excel Introduction to Data Analysis is a prerequisite for this course.
Box Fundamentals
Sept. 17, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Get an overview of Box, the cloud-based service that provides secure file storage and sharing at UCOP. We’ll cover how to use Box, collaborating with UCOP and non-UCOP colleagues, commenting directly on files, folder permissions, shared links and many other tips that will help you when using Box. IT administrators will be available to answer your questions. Learn more about Box.
Presentation skills
Delivery Skills for Connecting with Your Audience
Sept. 24, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Public speaking and giving formal and informal presentations can be uncomfortable and daunting. Luckily, delivery skills can be practiced and improved with each presentation. In this interactive session, we will identify presentation anxieties, learn how to prepare for them, explore various presentation styles and audience-engagement techniques and review tips and tricks to make your next presentation a success. Please bring a recent presentation, outline or presentation idea to practice.
People manager training
GROW Plus: Accountability Conversation for Managers
Sept. 4, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
In the second part of our required live training series for managers, we’ll answer the question: “What do I do when my coaching is not improving performance?” In this highly interactive workshop, we will cover providing productive critical feedback, managing emotions, creating efficient documentation and holding effective accountability conversations, using the UCOP GROW Plus framework.
People Leader Forum: Steady Leadership in Turbulent Times

The People Leader Forum is a monthly opportunity for people managers to connect with one another to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their teams. Our Sept. 5 session is Steady Leadership in Turbulent Times: Psychological Tools for Navigating Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (aka VUCA). Join Dr. Ana Dolatabadi from the UCSF Faculty and Staff Assistance Program for this one-hour training designed specifically for leaders navigating uncertainty.
GROWing Your Check-in Conversations for Managers
Sept. 23, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
GROW is a popular coaching framework used worldwide for problem solving, goal setting and performance improvement. This interactive session allows managers to discuss and practice using the GROW framework as a strategy and tool to support engaging STEP checkpoint conversations. Note: The e-course “GROWing your Checkpoint Conversations” must be taken before this class.
