Professor Paiz will discuss his book, “The Strikers of Coachella: A Rank-and-File History of the UFW Movement” (UNC, 2023). In this book, Paiz argues that while the United Farm Workers Movement and the Coachella Valley have entered the national consciousness for unrelated reasons, the everyday farmworkers who once spirited the labor movement, and who today labor at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, are not widely understood or acknowledged. Drawing on extensive oral interviews, Professor Paiz will return to the UFW’s rank-and-file membership and examine the implications of its history for contemporary labor movements.
