Development for senior managers: Invest three days to build your skills

Do you manage people or complex programs at UCOP? Do you have just three days to refresh your skills and become more effective at engaging your team and making change happen?

UC launched the systemwide UC Management Development program in 2012 to develop the leadership skills of managers at all its locations, including UCOP. The course will be offered again this spring to middle- to upper-level managers who manage people or complex organizational programs.

“The entire course was very good and applicable to the work we all do at UC,” said program alumna Ellen Lorenz, director of the Retirement Administration Service Center.

“The employee engagement session in particular was helpful to me,” Lorenz added. “It emphasized how to ask my direct reports what I can do to remove barriers and help them achieve their own goals as well as support the goals of the university.”

The program is designed to equip managers with the competencies, tools and resources they need to manage and engage their teams and to manage change. Learning goals include how to effectively manage operations to support the university’s mission and engage staff to maximize both individual and organizational achievement.

The three full-day sessions are centered on three core UC competencies and are scheduled monthly from February to April. All sessions will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. as follows:

  • People Management: Thursday, Feb. 13, California State University East Bay, 1000 Broadway, Suite 109
  • Employee Engagement: March date to be announced
  • Making Change Happen/Influencing for Organizational Impact: April date to be announced

Following completion of the three sessions, participants have the opportunity to attend a conference to share their knowledge and experiences with UC Management Development program graduates from across the system.

If you would like to participate or if you would like one of your managers to participate, contact Learning and Development Manager Linda Klink at linda.klink@ucop.edu by Friday, Jan. 31.  Enrollment is limited and the program will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

NOTE: This program is designed for middle- to upper-level managers. If you are a first-line supervisor interested in a similar program, please see the UCOP Leadership Development Program webpage.
