President Napolitano helps launch Oakland Promise
On Jan. 28, President Janet Napolitano joined Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf to launch the Oakland Promise initiative. Identified as Schaaf’s top priority, the program aims to triple college graduation rates among Oakland public school graduates by providing financial and academic support.

“I’m here to say that UC wants Oakland students to come to the university,” Napolitano said at the event, inviting the high school students in attendance to apply to join 1,300 of their fellow Oakland peers in the UC system.
