UCOP optimization efforts show alignment with UC mission
Last week, Chief Strategy Officer Zoanne Nelson shared an overview of several recent studies of UCOP’s structure, operations and business processes. More than 600 staff joined Nelson in person or online to hear about recent changes to accounting, finance and compensation practices, recommendations from the Huron report and feedback from campuses.
Nelson acknowledged that the degree of scrutiny and work to improve the organization has been hard, but also rewarding: Ultimately, it has shown that the work of UCOP is in fact aligned with the mission of the university, that it is right-sized and that the work we do here is appropriate for the administrative office of a public university system.
Both COO Rachael Nava and Nelson recognized the tremendous effort of UCOP staff in collecting and analyzing data, and implementing changes to ensure financial transparency and equity in business practices with the state. Nelson also highlighted this work helps UC articulate its complex budgeting process and build a stronger foundation for long-term planning and strategy.
We will never stop examining ourselves and striving for improvement, Nelson said, adding that “I am proud to come to work here every day. I’m proud of the people I work with and [what] we have done together.”
