Howard Gillman kicks off 2020 Chancellor Chats
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, nearly 300 UCOP staff members joined Chancellor Howard Gillman of UC Irvine in person or via Zoom for a very engaging first Chancellor Chat of the year.
In addition to his role at Irvine, Chancellor Gillman is an award-winning scholar, teacher and author of four books. He also serves as co-chair of the Advisory Board of UC’s National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement.
Chancellor Gillman, whose passion for UC and public service was evident, commended staff for their roles in serving the university. “We’re at a time of life where you need as much hope as you can get — as many examples as you can get — of how rewarding it can be to dedicate yourself to a mission and know that you can transform lives for the better,” he said.
In his chat, he shared that UC Irvine is the campus “doing the most for the American dream,” through creating economic opportunity for underresourced communities and students. A first-generation college graduate himself, Chancellor Gillman spoke at length about the campus’ important role in serving the Orange County community.
“The thing that we’ve been most proud of — and it’s part of the DNA of the entire university of California — is our student body,” he said. “What we love is this mixture of our commitment to our academic and research excellence on the one hand and also serving all of the people on the other. That’s the vision of the University of California: It’s a system of public ideas.”
