Tax-form check-off funds two cancer-fighting UC programs
The following is a message from UC President Janet Napolitano.
Dear Colleagues:
As you prepare to file your state income taxes this year, I wanted to let you know about an opportunity to help University of California researchers in the fight against cancer.
UC administers two highly-regarded cancer research funds on behalf of the State of California. The Research Grants Program Office manages the donations to fund research that focuses on prevention, treatment and the survivability of cancers that affect many Californians.
All donations, no matter the size, make a difference, and 95 percent of contributions go directly to research and education efforts. If you’d like to support this important work, you can do so when you fill out California’s 540 Income Tax Return form. It includes a section that lists funds to which taxpayers may contribute:
Line 405 supports the California Breast Cancer Research Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund. Since its inception, the fund has supported more than $12 million in breast cancer research. A recent grant, for example, is developing a new MRI screening technique that eliminates contrast agent injections and their potential side effects, but maintains the sensitivity to detect breast cancers.
Line 413 supports the California Cancer Research Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund. Donations are used to advance research to prevent, treat, and cure all types of cancer. One recently funded project is exploring ways to adapt existing behavioral cancer prevention interventions to more effectively reach Pacific Islanders in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Together, we can help UC researchers and others across California in the quest to end cancer.
Thank you for your consideration.
