Get your flu shot! Oakland clinics start this week

Flu season is here and the 2022-2023 influenza vaccination is now available. Protect yourself, your colleagues and your community by getting your flu shot early. We encourage all employees to receive a flu vaccine as soon as possible.

As in past years, if you’re working at a UC location, you must affirm your vaccine or formally decline one by completing the Declination of Influenza Vaccination form by Dec. 1, 2022. (Read about UC’s vaccine policy below.) If you come on-site, you will affirm your vaccine through UCOP Screen, which is in the process of being updated for the 2022-2023 flu vaccination.

All employees: It’s easy to find a flu shot

Flu vaccines are widely available — contact a retail pharmacy in your medical plan’s network or your primary care provider. All UC medical plans include coverage for flu vaccinations at no cost to those covered by the plan, as long as you follow your plan’s guidelines.

Oakland employees: Sign up for a flu shot clinic

Come get your flu shot at UCOP’s 2022 Oakland Flu Shot Clinic in partnership with UC San Francisco.

  • When: October 12, 10 – 11 a.m., or  October 19, 9 – 10 a.m.
  • Where: Franklin Building, Lobby 2
  • Sign up: Complete the UCOP 2022 Flu Shot Clinic Sign-Up Smartsheet to make sure that a vaccine is available for you. After those who have signed up have been vaccinated, walk-ins may be accepted if additional vaccines are available.
  • Bring: Your UCOP employee badge. You do not need to bring your medical plan card.
  • Note: If you would like to have your flu shot documented in your medical record, UCSF will offer a signed note from their nurse practitioner that you can give to your medical provider.

About the systemwide policy on vaccination programs

UC’s policy on vaccination programs, issued Aug. 30, 2022, consolidates existing vaccination requirements into a central document. UCOP leadership will make decisions regarding requirements for those who decline the flu vaccine (i.e. masking and other non-pharmaceutical interventions). These measures are intended to protect all members of the UC community, including students, faculty and partners with whom they interact. Read the Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Program (PDF).

Flu shot basics: 5 things to know

  1. How much will my flu vaccine cost?
All Affordable Care Act-compliant medical insurance plans, including UC’s employee health plans, cover influenza vaccination at no cost to you, as long as you follow your plan’s guidelines. Please call the member services number on your ID card if you have questions.
  2. I’m working remotely. Am I required to get a flu shot?
Even if you continue to work remotely, everyone is encouraged to obtain the 2022-2023 vaccine consistent with CDC guidance. If you may need to access a UC facility at any time from Dec. 1, 2022, through the end of the 2022-2023 flu season, you must certify that you have received the 2022-2023 flu vaccine or have opted out by completing the Declination of Influenza Vaccination form.
  3. Does the flu vaccine requirement apply to represented employees?
Yes. Represented employees are covered by the flu vaccine mandate.
  4. I’m an hourly employee. Can I take time off to get my flu shot?
Yes, you may take up to two hours of paid time off; you must provide advance notice to your supervisor.
  5. Does the flu vaccine requirement apply to contractors?
All members of the UCOP community are strongly encouraged to receive the flu vaccination.
