HR’s Lily Pang to retire in June

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to tell you that Lily Pang, Director of Vendor Management for Human Resources, will retire in June after 33 years of devoted service to the University of California.  Lily has been a wonderful colleague and a valued asset to the University and particularly the Office of the President.

Lily has given tremendous energy and commitment to carrying out numerous Human Resource initiatives over the years and, in doing so, has ensured the best operations and top customer service delivery of the University’s benefit programs.  During her UC career, Lily oversaw successful completion of several organizational and benefit program initiatives within Human Resources.

In the 1980s, Lily was one of the charter members of the Health & Welfare Policy group and her expertise was critical to the start-up and ongoing functions of the Health & Welfare program for faculty, staff and retirees.  When we think of Lily, I believe most of us consider her “THE” guru of the health program for employees and retirees.  Lily has been an authority in all areas of health and welfare benefits and her knowledge, and willingness to share it, were critical elements in both creating an effective Health & Welfare program and also improving the delivery and administration of the University’s  benefit programs.  Lily was always enormously instrumental in the strategic planning and policy direction of numerous health care issues which were key to both the delivery and sustainability the University’s employee benefit programs.  We will greatly miss Lily’s wealth of knowledge!

Most recently, Lily did an exceptional job of leading the Benefits Vendor Management group for both the Retirement Savings Program and the Health & Welfare Program.  Lily implemented negotiated plan changes with a myriad of details, persistently holding vendors accountable for delivery of what they promised.  Lily has always championed the needs of the faculty, staff and retirees and her compassionate leadership has enriched customer service. Lily was always a major resource for campus administration – going the “extra mile” to get them what they needed.  She brought that same willingness and determination to helping individuals.

Lily informed us early this year of her intention to retire in June 2010 – her last day at work will be May 28, 2010. While we are very happy for Lily on her retirement plans, we deeply regret Lily will be leaving us.  Please join me in expressing sincere thanks to Lily for her many contributions to the University.  We will miss Lily, but wish her all the best as she moves into retirement and is able to enjoy her hobbies and some travel.  I am honored to have had the pleasure of working with Lily all these years and being her supervisor this last year.  We are planning to recognize Lily during a retirement party on Thursday, May 27 at 3:00. Details will follow shortly.

Sincerely,

Mike Baptista
Executive Director – Benefits Programs & Strategy
