More about guest speaker Thanda Myeni

Thanda is visiting the Bay Area as Suzanne’s guest in order to obtain training, curriculum and teaching materials in special education to share with her colleagues in rural Zululand (South Africa). Specifically, the Khulani Special School, a newly created school for 60 special needs learners (students), has an urgent need for such assistance.

Thanda attended Eshowe Teacher`s College, where she received a secondary teacher’s diploma. She received a bachelor’s degree in Technology specializing in Education Management from Pretoria Technikon. She also studied at the Embury Institute for teacher training, receiving a certificate in teaching learners with special needs. She’s currently pursuing a master’s degree in Education Management.

Thanda has taught biology, natural sciences, and isiZulu for middle and high school students. After being promoted to deputy principal at Nkomo Primary School in 2004, she has continued to teach Life Orientation and isiZulu.

This is Thanda’s first trip out of South Africa, which will also include visits to several San Francisco schools, both public and charter.
