Office 365 migration under way

Approximately 315 UCOP employees were greeted with their first login to the new Microsoft Office 365 email service on Monday morning. They’re the first group to migrate to the new cloud-based email and calendaring system; a smaller group has been piloting the system for a few weeks.
Information Technology Services (ITS) will continue moving all UCOP users to Office 365, department by department, each weekend. By Oct. 18, all users and service accounts will be on the new system.
According to survey results from our early adopters, favorite features include instant messaging (available in the Outlook Web Application only), encryption on demand and having email threads displayed together (a la Gmail).
As your migration date approaches, ITS will send you instructions taking you through the conversion process with guides for logging into the service for the first time using Windows 7 / Mac OS, configuring your smartphone and tablet to use the new service, and how to use the new Outlook Web App to access your email as well as instant messaging from any browser.
Be sure to save the instructions on your computer or print them so you can access them when you log in to the new system for the first time. Once the migration has taken place, you won’t be able to retrieve them from your old mailbox.
About a week before your transition to Office 365, ITS will enable caching on all machines to be migrated that week. This may result in a slight delay while your email loads from cache. (The delay will vary, depending on the size of your mailbox.) Otherwise, you won’t experience any down time.
ITS will offer brown bags on the Monday and Wednesday following each migration. The sessions will be led by Gilbert Loo, director of infrastructure, and will provide plenty of opportunity for new users to ask questions. ReadyTalk dial-in information will be included in the email with instructions.
