UCOP launches an updated strategic framework

UCOP has just launched an updated organizational strategic framework — a document that provides guidance to all UCOP divisions and staff so we can focus our energy and resources on actions that will best position UC to achieve its academic, research and public service missions. The framework articulates and guides our mission, vision, values and strategic objectives.

Creating a new strategic framework

UCOP released its first strategic framework in 2019, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. While much of what guides us as an organization endures, COVID-19 and recent events have highlighted the importance of adapting our strategies and prioritizing our actions during a time of tremendous change.

UCOP division leaders met over several months in 2022 and 2023 to develop the updated framework. It is informed by higher-education trends and President Drake’s priorities (PDF). Leadership incorporated input and guidance from President Drake, the UCOP Strategy & Program Management Office (SPMO) and UCOP staff, as well UC campuses.

New strategic objectives

The updated framework outlines five strategic objectives that will inform all division-level goals:

  • Strengthen an inclusive UC workforce and community
  • Expand opportunities in learning and research
  • Support a prosperous, resilient, and healthy California
  • Develop and maintain sustainable financial models
  • Deliver operational service excellence

Unifying our work

All strategic objectives are critical to our success as an organization and all divisions and employees contribute to achieving them. Aligning UCOP under the strategic framework will clarify our role within UC, connect UCOP staff with the value our work brings to the university and continue to strengthen our culture and community.
