Planning to decorate your workspace? Check out these guidelines.
For many colleagues, decorating workspaces for autumn and winter celebrations is a beloved annual tradition. If you’re planning to add some pizzaz to your area, please make sure to follow these best practices to avoid injuries and other hazards, and to keep our workplace fun and safe for everyone.
Choosing decorations
- Choose battery-operated lights. Lit candles, and other open flames, are strictly prohibited.
- Do not use materials that can leave a lasting residue (e.g. glue, glitter, confetti, feathers).
- Only artificial plants are allowed; do not bring live plants or Christmas trees.
- Fog machines and other decor that create an artificial mist or smoke are prohibited.
Attaching/installing decorations
- Use only “blue/green” painters’ tape to affix decorations to surfaces. Remove all tape as soon as possible after the holiday/event.
- Be sure not to block doors, walkways, entrances/exits and identification signs. Decorations cannot compromise clear and unobstructed access/egress routes and well-lit exits.
- Do not affix or attach anything to ceiling tiles, ceiling tile supports, overhead lights, or fire sprinklers and systems.
- Do not climb on furniture or chairs when hanging decorations.
- To avoid a trip hazard, decorations must be hung a minimum of 2 feet off the ground.
- Be especially mindful if your workspace is in or adjacent to an area where people often walk back and forth as they travel around the office (such as a hallway, coorridor or open-office circulation area). Do not place or install decorations that protrude more than 4 inches from your workplace.
- Be very careful when taping decorations to glass partitions on cubicles. Do not completely obstruct or cover the glass. Cubicles cannot be enclosed.
Note: If you use plugged-in decorative lights, they must be unplugged at the close of business each day (at 5 p.m.). Please be especially conscientious about shutting off lights over weekends and extended holidays.
