Learning and Development has planned an array of classes and leadership development opportunities throughout December.

Subtle Acts of Exclusion
Dec. 3, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
The term “microaggression” is widely used, yet just as widely misunderstood. Join us as we reframe microaggressions as subtle acts of exclusion (SAE). Explore the SAE framework and participate in group dialogue on normalizing interrupting these acts and engaging colleagues in discussion. Participants will reflect on our socialization and its impact on our outlook, attitudes and behaviors; understand the shift in language to SAEs; and participate in group dialogue on best practices to interrupt SAEs.

UCOP Safety: Basic Awareness
Dec. 3, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Melissa Collins, Program Manager for Security, Risk and Resilience, will facilitate this live virtual class that will provide essential safety tips to help employees feel informed, alert, and safe as they travel to and from the workplace. Extra time will be allotted for questions and feedback. Melissa joined UCOP after serving 20 years with the UC San Diego Police Department, retiring as a lieutenant, and is a safety expert.

GROWing your Check-in Conversations for Managers
Dec. 4, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
GROW is a popular coaching framework used worldwide for problem-solving, goal-setting, and performance improvement. This interactive session allows managers to discuss and practice using the GROW framework as a strategy and tool to support engaging STEP Check-in conversations. GROW is a simple meeting structure that supports a growth and development stance in employee-manager coaching and feedback conversations.

Accessible PDFs
Dec. 4, 1 -2 p.m.
This course focuses on Adobe Acrobat and advanced PDF accessibility remediation techniques. You will learn to edit or enhance accessibility within a PDF file and check PDFs with a screen reader.

UCOP Safety: Active-Attacker Training
Dec. 5, 2 – 3 p.m.
Melissa Collins, program manager for Security, Risk, and Resilience, will facilitate this live virtual class. Participants will learn skills and strategies for responding to active-attacker situations. The course will review real-life incidents and discuss options in the event of potential similar encounters.

New Employee Orientation
Oakland: Dec. 10, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Oakland, Franklin Lobby 1
Virtual: Dec. 12, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Starting a new job or at a new UC location can be daunting. This session is designed to facilitate your smooth transition to the organization. We’ll cover UC and its history, provide an overview of UCOP as an organization, examine employee tools and resources, and discuss safety and compliance. You are encouraged to attend a session as soon as possible; however, your orientation attendance date does not impact your benefits enrollment period (31 days from your benefits eligibility date).

Mindfulness at UCOP
Dec. 13, 10 – 11 a.m.
Less stress. Enhanced awareness and focus. Improved health. These are some of the benefits shown in research studies on mindfulness. In this one-hour workshop, you will learn how to reduce stress and increase your effectiveness at work through simple mindfulness techniques.

People Leader Forum – Team Reflection Activities
Dec. 13, 1 – 2 p.m.
The People Leader Forum is a monthly opportunity for people managers to connect with one another to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their teams. In this section, we’ll help you plan rewarding end-of-year reflection activities for your team.
