It’s time to update your VPN
In its ongoing efforts to protect UCOP’s data, ITS has transitioned from Cisco AnyConnect VPN to Global Protect VPN.
What this means for you
Global Connect has been installed on all UCOP devices by ITS. You will need to log in to Global Protect by following these steps:
- Disconnect from AnyConnect VPN as it will conflict with Global Protect and will be removed from UCOP devices on April 16.
- If you use Windows, click on the arrow in the bottom right corner of the desktop, then click the globe icon. If you are on a Mac, the arrow icon will be in the top right corner of OSX.
- Once Global Protect is open, select or type in the portal URL:
— UCOP staff: internal-vpn.ucop.edu
— Administrators: admin-vpn.ucop.edu - Click Connect and log in with your UCOP AD credentials when prompted.
- Another browser window will open for multifactor authentication. Enter your AD credentials again.
- You should now get a Duo push with a code on your phone. Type the Duo code into the prompt on your computer and you will be connected to the new VPN. If you do not get a Duo push, try opening up the Duo application on your phone manually to navigate to the push. To use a hardware token, navigate to the Duo prompt, select “Other Options,” then “Security Key,” press the button on your token to generate a passcode, enter it, and click “Verify.”
For more information, see the detailed instructions.
If you have a UCOP-issued iPhone or iPad
To access Global Protect from you iPhone or iPad, download the app from the App Store and follow these instructions:
- When you open the Global Protect app, you’ll be prompted to allow notifications. After allowing notifications, click “Continue.”
- You’ll then be prompted to enter your portal address, i.e., internal-/external-/admin-vpn.ucop.edu. Then click “Connect.”
- On the next screen, allow VPN configurations and enter your phone’s passcode.
- On the next screen, log in with your UCOP credentials and follow the subsequent DUO prompts. You’ll then be connected.
When should you use the UCOP VPN service?
UCOP VPN is required when:
- Remotely changing your UCOP password.
- Remotely accessing resources that are otherwise accessible only via the internal UCOP network (examples may include file shares, server interfaces / consoles and some sensitive applications).
Use of UCOP VPN is also recommended when accessing UC-related applications and resources from a non-trusted network (examples may include wi-fi offered at a coffee shop, local business, hotel, airport or a friend’s house).
Additional information
For more, see the detailed instructions, and if you experience any problems logging in to the VPN, contact the Service Desk. The Service Desk can also help if you need to keep AnyConnect in order to access resources outside of UCOP.
