Support wellness through fragrance awareness
Many of us enjoy a spritz of cologne, a scented lotion or the cozy smell of a candle. However, for some colleagues, these fragrances – especially synthetic ones – can trigger serious health issues, including migraines, respiratory difficulties, asthma flare-ups and other health concerns. By being mindful of the scents you bring into our shared workspaces, you can contribute to a more comfortable environment where everyone can do their best work.
Common scent culprits
- Perfume, cologne or body spray that lingers in meeting rooms or elevators
- Strongly scented lotion or hand sanitizer at desks or in offices
- Plug-in or spray air freshener in offices, kitchens, copy rooms or restrooms
- Scented candle, incense or diffusers
Everyday ways to be scent-smart
- Go light on personal fragrance — or skip it for days you’re working on-site. These fragrances include perfume, cologne, aftershave, body sprays and strongly scented lotions.
- Skip the scented extras like plug-in air fresheners, essential oil diffusers, incense or candles in shared spaces. Open-flame candles and plug-in air fresheners with heat-producing elements (such as heated oil warmers) are not permitted in UCOP facilities because they are fire hazards.
- Do not bring scented hand soap, lotion or other cosmetics into restrooms and other common areas (fragrance-free is different from “unscented,” which can still have masking scents).
If a scent is bothering you
- Assess the impact: Consider how the scent affects you (e.g., headaches, asthma symptoms or difficulty concentrating) to help determine how best to proceed and what you might share with others.
- If the scent continues to be an issue, reach out to your manager or supervisor so they can help find a solution.
If you’re a manager or supervisor and a staff member comes to you, approach the conversation with kindness, tact, and discretion when discussing this matter with all parties. The person wearing or sharing this fragrance likely does not intend to cause any discomfort, and your discussion with them should not come across as a disciplinary conversation. Please emphasize that our shared objective is to maintain a healthy and respectful environment for everyone. If you need additional guidance, contact your HR business partner.
Thanks for helping make our shared spaces fresh, comfortable and easy on the senses for everyone. These small changes can make a meaningful difference in helping everyone feel welcome and well at work.
