Oakland staff: Broadway Building fire alarm drill scheduled for this Thursday, July 2
A planned fire drill will take place on the morning this Thursday, July 2, in the Broadway building. This drill is required by Broadway Building Management and will only affect the Broadway building. A separate fire drill for the Franklin building was conducted by UCOP Operations in December 2025.
Please find key details below to help prepare and support your teams during this important safety drill.
What to expect
The Fire Alarm will be activated on Floor 9, triggering loudspeaker instructions for occupants to relocate as follows (not a full evacuation):
- Floor 10 will relocate to Floor 6
- Floor 9 will relocate to Floor 5
- Floor 8 will relocate to Floor 4
- Floor 7 will relocate to Floor 3
- Floors 6, 5, 4 and 3 will remain in place, but may hear PA announcements
Employee safety coordinators (ESCs) and members of the Building and Administrative Service Center (BASC) team will be present to guide occupants during the relocation process.
- Treat the alarm as real.
- Relocate via the nearest stairwell. Do NOT use the elevators.
- Following your ESC’s direction, proceed to the designated relocation floor assembly area and remain there until BASC gives the all-clear.
- If you have an Individual Emergency Evacuation Plan (IEEP), go to your designated area of refuge and coordinate with your ESC and IEEP partner. If you believe you require an IEEP and do not have one in place, please email the Work Management Center as soon as possible.
If you are on any other floor
- You do NOT need to evacuate and may continue working.
- Elevators will be out of service during this time to simulate a real fire event.
- Stairwells will be open; however, please use them only when necessary.
- Use this time to review your nearest exit route.
ESC roles
Assigned ESCs will play an active role in leading the fire drill. These colleagues receive regular training to ensure they understand the procedures, expectations and their responsibilities during an evacuation, and this drill is a chance to apply those protocols. All UCOP staff can review the ESC training materials and access the ESC directory.
Optional post-drill debrief in Lobby 2:
Immediately following the drill, all staff and current ESGs are invited to join the BASC team in Lobby 2 for light refreshments and an after-action discussion. This will be an opportunity to review what went well, discuss any challenges and identify improvements for future drills.
