Select each course name for registration information. All times are Pacific. Unless otherwise noted, classes take place via Zoom.

Career management

Managing Up: Cultivating a Partnership with Your Manager
August 13, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Explore what you can do to build a productive working relationship with your manager. This interactive workshop will help individual contributors better understand their manager’s perspective, advocate for themselves, document their performance, communicate clearly and practice providing upward feedback.

STEP: Goals and Competencies
August 14, 9 – 10 a.m.
Take a closer look at the Define Criteria stage of the Staff Talent Evaluation Process (STEP). You’ll practice writing effective goals and learn how to connect them with UCOP competencies. The course is designed for new employees as well as anyone who would like a refresher.

Presentation skills

Delivery Skills
August 5, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Become a more comfortable and engaging presenter. This interactive workshop will introduce different presentation styles, ways to connect with your audience and tips for preparing for your next presentation. Participants will create an outline and practice their new skills in small groups.

Project Management for Non-Project Managers
August 12, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
You don’t need “project manager” in your title to benefit from project management skills. This workshop will introduce foundational principles and practical strategies you can use to organize projects, keep work moving and guide different types of projects toward successful completion.

Process improvement

Lean Six Sigma
August 27, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Explore essential process-improvement concepts and the Lean Six Sigma method through a hands-on group simulation. You’ll learn techniques you can apply to improve efficiency and effectiveness in your daily work.

Software and technology

Box Advanced
August 18, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Go beyond the basics of Box. This class will cover advanced features such as securely storing sensitive data, adding content through email or a URL, setting up folder alerts and using Box groups to manage collaboration across departments.

Excel: Introduction to Data Analysis
August 19 and 26, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Build essential Excel skills for working with data. You’ll learn how to clean and prepare data, use tables, sort and filter information, create basic formulas and charts, and get started with PivotTables. Microsoft Excel’s desktop version is required, and a dual-monitor setup is recommended. Attendance at both sessions is required.

Creating Accessible Documents Part 1: Word
August 26, 1 – 2:30 p.m.
Learn the principles of digital accessibility and how to create accessible Microsoft Word documents that can be exported to PDF. This is the first course in the series and a prerequisite for Creating Accessible Documents Part 2: PDFs.

Let’s Talk about Menopause: Understanding Menopause and Finding Support
August 27, 12 – 1 p.m.
This Faculty and Staff Assistance Program webinar will review the basics of the menopausal transition, explore current research and misinformation, and share resources for people experiencing menopause and those who support them.

Mindfulness at UCOP
August 28, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn simple mindfulness techniques that can help reduce stress and improve focus. This beginner-friendly workshop will explain how mindfulness differs from meditation and introduce practical techniques you can use during the workday.

For people managers

Managing Psychologically Safe Teams
August 18, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Psychological safety helps team members feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and learning from mistakes. In this workshop, managers will explore the four stages of psychological safety, assess their team culture and learn practical ways to better understand and support individual employees.

ME@UCOP: Managing in the Modern Workplace
August 20 and 21, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This two-session remote ME@UCOP course focuses on the skills managers need to lead effectively in today’s workplace. Participants should plan to attend both sessions.

Manager and Employee Conversations Part 2: Feedback for Employee Accountability
August 25, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
What should you do when coaching isn’t improving performance? In the second part of this required series, managers will practice providing critical feedback, managing emotions, documenting performance and holding accountability conversations using the UCOP GROW Plus framework.

ME@UCOP: Compensation
August 27, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
This ME@UCOP session gives managers an opportunity to learn more about compensation at UCOP.

People Leader Forum: Coaching as a Manager — What’s Different and What Works
August 28, 1 – 2 p.m.
Deepak Patil, an organization development consultant with UCOP Organizational Development, will explore how managers can use coaching as a practical, everyday leadership tool. Through simple models and interactive exercises, participants will learn how manager-led coaching differs from professional coaching and how to choose the right approach for employee conversations.
