Voluntary Reduction in Time program reinstated to reduce costs
UC is renewing the Employee-initiated Reduction In Time (ERIT) program, which enables eligible career staff (except Senior Management Group members) to voluntarily reduce their working time and corresponding pay to help UC address its ongoing budget challenges.
Employees may sign up for or renew participation in ERIT immediately. The program will be in effect from July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2017.
An employee may request his or her department head’s approval to voluntarily reduce working time, within specific limits, from a minimum of one month to a maximum of 36 months in exchange for certain advantages. However, implementation of the ERIT program is up to the discretion of department heads and may not be implemented in all departments.
ERIT is subject to collective bargaining for represented employees. These employees should check with UCOP Local Human Resources to determine their eligibility to participate in the program.
Program resources are available on the ERIT program website, including program provisions, frequently asked questions and the contract/contract amendment form.
The university has designed ERIT to give departments the latitude to most effectively implement the program within the context of their missions, operational needs, service requirements and budgets.
In negotiating individual ERIT work schedules with employees, it will be up to department heads to evaluate departmental priorities and adjust workloads to ensure that functional objectives continue to be met.
