Town Hall highlights — from the state budget to staff professional growth

On Monday, May 13, President Napolitano addressed a full room of OP staff, with satellite offices calling in from the UCPath Center in Riverside; Washington, D.C. and Sacramento. This second-quarter forum gave more than 850 OP staff an opportunity to hear first-hand updates on UC business and the president’s priorities.
She began the meeting with an update on state budget negotiations with Governor Newsom and legislative leaders, explaining that OP efforts to highlight the value of investing in UC have been noticed in Sacramento; for example, Gov. Newsom’s revised budget includes $25 million of new one-time funds for the UC Retirement Plan.
The president noted several recent systemwide successes, including 2019 College Signing Day featuring Michelle Obama and the Cool Campus Challenge, recognizing OP’s participation in and contributions to these efforts. OP’s specific achievements were highlighted in an update on the expansion of UCPath — which now serves more than 100,000 UC employees across six locations in payroll, human resources and benefits transactions — and the recently launched Chancellor Chats.
President Napolitano also thanked staff for their contributions — and patience — regarding the OP optimization, emphasizing that the optimization work was nearing the end, and that audits have validated her belief that the OP organization is right-sized and appropriate for the administrative office of a public university system.
Questions from the staff focused on performance management process improvements, the Oakland building renovations and moves, paid parental leave and healthy vending machine options.
