UC’s proposal to expand paid sick leave is under review

Over the past few years, UC has made notable strides in supporting work-life balance, including the introduction of the Pay for Family Care and Bonding program in 2021 and protected leave following reproductive loss in 2024. A new proposal, entering systemwide review on April 1, 2024, would continue that progress by significantly expanding access to paid sick leave.

The proposed changes would expand paid sick leave for part-time and full-time employees, effective Jan. 1, 2025. Pending revisions that arise during the review process and subject to applicable collective bargaining requirements, the proposed expansion would apply to represented and non-represented academic appointees and staff members, including per diem employees and those who work limited schedules.

UC’s official policy review process will ensure that management, staff, faculty, and other academic appointees have the opportunity to provide feedback. You can find the proposed revisions to academic personnel policy on the Academic Personnel and Programs policies under review page and to staff policy on Proposed policy changes for systemwide review: Absence from Work.

Final details about UC’s paid sick leave expansion will be shared as soon as they are available.
