Get ready for your second STEP Check-in, due Dec. 6
The 2024-25 fiscal year performance appraisal process began on April 1, 2024, and your second Staff Talent Evaluation Process (STEP) Check-in conversation is quickly approaching. Here’s what you need to know to complete the process. (New to UCOP? Start at “For New Employees,” below.)
All employees
Complete the first two steps prior to meeting with your manager, and then meet:
- Review and comment on your goals and competencies in ePerformance
STEP’s flexibility allows you to refresh goals and competencies throughout the year. Before your Check-in conversation, make any needed updates and prepare to discuss them with your manager. - Answer the four STEP Feedback questions
In ePerformance, answer the four discussion questions in the Feedback tab. Be prepared to discuss your answers during your Check-in. - Have your Check-in conversation with your manager by Dec. 6
Check-in conversations give you and your manager an opportunity to discuss the status of your goals and competencies, give and receive feedback, address concerns and discuss any needed support.

People managers
- As soon as possible: Ensure your employees’ Define Criteria and first Check-in are marked as complete in ePerformance
If you have not completed and approved the first two stages for your employees, they will not be able to update their comments or access their feedback questions for the second Check-in. See below for resources that can help you complete this process. - Complete Check-in conversations with your employees by Dec. 6
Review and provide comments on your employees’ goals, competencies and feedback questions, then complete Check-in conversations.

New employees
To get up to speed on STEP, the following courses are required:
New individual contributors
- STEP Fundamentals for Employees (e-course)
- GROWing your Check ins Conversations for all Employees (e-course)
New people managers
- STEP Fundamentals for Managers (e-course)
- GROWing your Check ins for Managers (2-hour live virtual class)
— Dec. 4, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (PT) - GROW Plus: Accountability Conversations for Managers (2.5 hour live virtual class)
— Nov. 19, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (PT)
