Upcoming leadership development opportunities for current and aspiring managers

UCOP Learning & Development is excited to offer two leadership development cohorts kicking off this fall! Take a moment to learn more about these programs and consider if they’re right for your leadership journey.

For aspiring people managers: The Leadership Fundamentals for Emerging Leaders Program (LFP)

Program summary: If you have never been a manager or supervisor and are interested in learning key aspects of leadership, LFP might be just what you’re looking for! Created and facilitated by longtime UCOP vendor Pierre Khawand, the LFP curriculum combines key leadership skills and strategies with lessons from Pierre’s highly rated courses, such as Accomplishing More with Less (time management and prioritization) and 21 Practices for Happiness at Work (wellness).

Who should apply: UCOP staff who do not currently hold a leadership title and are interested in pursuing a leadership role. LFP is ideal for people who want to learn about themselves and leadership, are motivated to learn and reflect and enjoy a highly interactive learning environment.

Application window: July 15 – August 21, 2025

How to learn more: Read the LFP program overview and FAQ for more information about this program, including additional eligibility criteria, You can also register for a 30-minute Zoom information session on July 24, from 2 – 2:30 p.m., or Aug. 7, from 9:30 – 10 a.m. (PT).

What past participants are saying about LFP:

  • “This program has strengthened my technical abilities and encouraged personal growth and reflection. I am now better equipped to tackle challenges and drive positive change within my organization.”
  • Participating in LFP was a game-changer for me. The program taught me the value of being intentional with my time and resources, which has led to increased productivity and less stress. The regular peer sessions were invaluable, providing support and encouragement from colleagues who were on the same journey.

For people managers (and managers-of-managers) with 5+ years of management experience: The UCOP Leadership Development Program (LDP)

Program summary: LDP is a 10-month cohort-based learning journey to discover and hone your developmental objectives as a leader. Grounded in our Leadership Framework and the UC Core Competencies, participants will engage in a 360 assessment to determine their focus objectives for the program. Monthly meetings will alternate between whole-group experiential learning (Crew Meetings) and small-group support (Camp Meetings).

Who should apply: Mid-career people managers and/or managers-of-managers who have at least five years of experience in a managerial position and have been managing at UCOP for at least one year. LFP is ideal for managers who are thinking about their next step, leading change for their teams and self-motivated to improve.

Application window: June 23August 6, 2025

How to learn more: Learn more by reading the LDP FAQ document or registering for a 30-minute Zoom info session on July 7, from 12:30 – 1 p.m., or July 23, from 2 – 2:30 p.m. (PT).

What past participants are saying about LDP:

  • “I highly recommend this program to my peers. The assessments, combined with experiential learning, are very helpful for understanding better leadership strategies.”
  • “The opportunity to dedicate work time to reflection, self-awareness and learning in a facilitated space has been impactful. I have also discovered common experiences with colleagues I never would have met without this cohort. This program is uniquely suited to allow open vulnerability, which in my experience has allowed us to share tools we use to empower ourselves and those we lead.”
