Summer Safety Chat informs staff on UCOP updates and Oakland trends

Director of Systemwide Community Safety Jody Stiger and Associate Director of Security Services Martin Ticas hosted a safety chat to keep UCOP staff informed about safety around our Oakland headquarters and the surrounding communities.
On Wednesday, June 18, UCOP Safety held a Safety Chat for UCOP staff in Oakland and via Zoom. Director of Systemwide Community Safety Jody Stiger and Associate Director of Security Services Martin Ticas led the conversation. They were joined by UCSF Police Department Captain Eric Banares, UCSF PD Sergeant Scott Carlson and Oakland Police Department Officer Nathnael Estifanos.
Conversation highlights
Some of the notable information that Jody, Martin and their guests shared with the community included:
- A detailed overview of declining crime rates in Oakland and around the Broadway/Franklin campus, which has led to a greater sense of community engagement and foot traffic. Oakland PD noted that crime is down in nearly all categories, including significant decreases in shootings and homicides and a 41% decrease in robberies.
- Increased daily patrolling of UCOP offices by UCSF PD
- More safety ambassadors to help staff have a greater sense of well-being and support
- Plans to update camera systems throughout UCOP’s Oakland buildings
- An update on the types and frequency of notifications shared through UCOP Alert (Learn how to register your personal phone and email.)
Oakland PD Summer Safety Plan
Oakland PD representatives shared information about their agency’s 2025 Summer Safety Plan — a comprehensive strategy to enhance public safety throughout the city this summer. Highlights of the plan include:
- An increased citywide police presence
- Continuing to leverage the Ceasefire Division, a proven strategy that has reduced homicides and non-fatal shootings
- Additional foot patrol officers to improve response times and visibility in business districts
- Continued efforts by the Vice Squad to conduct undercover operations and long-term investigations into human trafficking
- Strengthening data-driven enforcement by partnering the OPD’s traffic enforcement, real-time operations and gun intelligence teams with the U.S. Marshals, California Highway Patrol and local law enforcement partners
- Continued coordination with prosecutors from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, State Attorney General, and U.S. Attorney’s Office to ensure those arrested are held accountable
- Proactive policing and community partnerships to ensure safety during major events
