Put yourself first this holiday season

The end-of-year hustle and bustle can be a lot of fun, but it can also leave us feeling stressed. UC experts are here to help with strategies for surviving the holiday season.

Here are their tips:

  • Schedule time for yourself: Set aside time a few days a week for relaxing activities that you enjoy. Stick to this schedule like you would to any other plans.
  • Don’t over-imbibe: Set a mental drinking limit before every social event, including the option to not drink at all, so you have a plan to follow. If you do plan to indulge, have something in your stomach first.
  • Create mini-moments of mindfulness: Slow down to soak in the positive experiences you have, like appreciating a beautiful decoration, feeling the crisp weather on your skin or connecting with a friend.
  • Take a break if you need to: If you feel agitated, whether by a family situation or another circumstance beyond your control, try changing your scenery and checking into your senses to bring you into the present moment.
  • Choose healthy foods: If you know you’ll be tempted by holiday sweets at parties, eat a healthy meal or snacks before you head out.

We also recommend relaxing with a good read: Check out the Greater Good Science Center’s favorite books of 2025.
