Career development and soft skills

Influence Without Authority: Leadership as an Individual Contributor
Nov. 7, 1 – 2:30 p.m.
This workshop will empower individual contributors to take ownership of their career growth, leverage their knowledge and skills and make an impact — without climbing the corporate ladder. We’ll explore the leadership skills all “rockstars” need to become influential contributors within their unique positions: building trusting workplace relationships, managing up, carving out a niche area of expertise, and connecting the dots from their role to the organizational mission.

Change Essentials
Nov. 22, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.; Dec. 3 and 5, 1 – 3 p.m. (Must attend all three sessions.)
Based on the best-selling book, “Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions,” this course will cover eight key steps and four critical leadership principles to foster successful change. You’ll learn how to identify strategies to apply these steps to departmental and organizational change.

People managers

GROW Plus: Accountability Conversations for Managers
Nov. 6 or Nov. 19, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This is the second part of the required live training series on manager and employee performance conversations. This training answers the question: “What do I do when my coaching is not improving performance?” In this virtual, live, and highly interactive workshop, we will cover: providing productive critical feedback, managing emotions, creating efficient documentation and holding effective accountability conversations. Managers will also practice role-playing accountability conversations using the UCOP GROW Plus framework.

Psychological Safety
Nov. 14, 1 – 3 p.m.
Psychological safety is the number one determinant of team success. In this new workshop designed for people managers, you will learn the benefits of building a culture of psychological safety on your team; the Four Stages of Psychological Safety and the behaviors associated with each; how to assess your current team culture; and using the BICEPS framework.

People Leader Forum: Tips and Tricks to Make STEP Work for You
Nov. 15, 1 – 2 p.m.
The People Leader Forum is a monthly opportunity for people managers to connect with one another to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their teams. This month we’ll focus on how to make your STEP experience more positive. Save the date for Dec. 20, when we’ll cover team reflection activities.

Technology workshops

Excel Power BI
Nov. 6, 13 and 20, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Must attend all three sessions.)
Learn about and practice using Power BI, including how to connect to data sources; perform data cleaning, profiling and shaping; create interactive visualizations; and enhance, then publish and share, reports and dashboards.

PowerPoint Techniques
Nov. 12, 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Learn powerful techniques that can help save significant time, better manipulate and format presentations, convey information in a compelling way and collaborate with others more effectively.

Box Fundamentals
Nov. 20, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This course provides an overview of Box, a cloud-based service that provides secure file storage and file sharing at UCOP. We’ll cover the basics of using Box, collaborating with colleagues and people outside UCOP, file comments, folder permissions, shared links and more. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions.

Safety

UCOP Safety: Active Attacker Training
Nov. 5 or Dec. 5, 2 – 3 p.m.
This live virtual class will teach you skills and strategies to respond if you’re exposed to an active-attacker situation. We’ll review real-life incidents and discuss options in the event of similar encounters.

New employees

New Employee Orientation
Nov. 12, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Oakland, Franklin Lobby 1
Starting a new job or at a new UC location can be daunting. This session is designed to facilitate your smooth transition to the organization. We’ll cover UC and its history, an overview of UCOP as an organization, employee tools and resources, safety, and compliance. You are encouraged to attend a session as soon as possible; however, your orientation attendance date does not impact your benefits enrollment period (31 days from your benefits eligibility date).
