BASC begins fire alarm system upgrade in Franklin building
The Building and Administrative Service Center (BASC) team recently started a planned upgrade of the fire alarm system in the Franklin building from the parking levels to the 12th floor. The new fire alarm system will modernize the system that has been in place since the building’s original construction in 1998 and provide better coverage in emergencies.
The new system will include new notification and initiating devices on all floors, new fire alarm panels, and expanded cable infrastructure throughout the building.
What to expect during construction?
- You may see construction crew members on your floor.
- You may hear some low-level construction noise.
- Going floor-by-floor, the construction crew will replace the strobes and speakers. During that time, they will disconnect the floor from the alarm system and bring in the Security department to patrol for any safety issues.
- BASC will try to conduct audible alarm testing outside core business hours (either early morning or evening). BASC will provide advance notice if they must conduct audible testing during core business hours.
The emergency and evacuation procedures for the Franklin building remain the same during the construction project.
The work will continue through February 2023. The BASC project team appreciates your patience during the project. If you have questions, contact Jihee Lee, BASC facilities project manager, at jihee.lee@ucop.edu or 510-914-2073.
